Regional distribution of sodium--potassium--activated adenosine triphosphatase in the rat gastrointestinal tract.

چکیده
Several solutes are preferentially absorbed by specific segments of the gastrointestinal tract(l). This variation in the distribution of sites for particular absorptive meclhanisms suggests that the enzymes related to these processes may also be assymmetrically distributed. The observation that ouabain, an inhibitor of sodium-potassium-activated adenosine triphosphatase (Na-K-ATPase) in vitro, inlhibits intestinal transport systems(2,3) suggests that this enzyme may be involved in the active absorption of sodium by the gut. The present study was designedI to test the hlypothesis that the regional distribution of Na-K-ATPase in the gut will correlate witlh physiological information on the sites of preferential absorption of sodium and water.

Temperature-dependence of activation and inhibition of rat-brain adenosine triphosphatase activated by sodium and potassium ions.
1. The adenosine-triphosphatase activity of rat-brain microsomes was measured between 0 degrees and 37 degrees . The stimulatory effect of Na(+) plus K(+) on the Mg(2+)-dependent adenosine-triphosphatase activity decreased sharply with decreasing temperature and became negligible at 0 degrees . An Arrhenius plot drawn from the experimental data showed two discontinuities: one at about 6 degrees...

متن کاملThe Action of Thiol Reagents on the Adenosine-triphosphatase Activities of Heavy Meromyosin and L-myosin.
1. The Ca(2+)-activated adenosine triphosphatase of heavy meromyosin is maximally stimulated by lower relative molar concentrations of phenylmercuric acetate than are required with myosin. 2. Stimulation of the Ca(2+)-activated adenosine triphosphatase of both heavy meromyosin and myosin by thiol reagents is markedly affected by ionic strength, the effects being greater with the former than wit...
